Philip Villaume is a successful, nationally-recognized attorney whose practice focuses on professional disciplinary procedures, criminal defense and civil litigation.
Villaume is an adjunct faculty member at the University of St. Thomas and formerly taught at Hamline University School of Law and the University of Minnesota.
Mr.Villaume concentrates his practice in criminal defense law and employment law, representing professionals facing employment-related misconduct allegations. He also represents victims of workplace harassment, discrimination, and abuse. Mr.Villaume conducts workshops and seminars nationwide on the topics of criminal law and procedure, diversity in education, the community and the workplace, and on the topics of the prevention of workplace violence and harassment. He is considered a national expert and consultant on the topics of professional misconduct, professional ethics, harassment, and violence in schools and the workplace.
Award-Winning Lawyer
Villaume received the 1991 Minnesota Lawyer Judges Choice Award as the "Most Well Prepared Lawyer." He was selected in 1994-96 and then again in 1996-98 by his peers for inclusion in the prestigious Business and Consumer Guidebook to Law & Leading Attorneys.
Courtroom Success
His notable courtroom victories include the successful defense in the leading teacher's rights case in the United States, State v. Gruhl. In 1990, his representation in State v. Hershberger set precedent before the Supreme Court of the United States regarding religious freedom for the Amish. In 1996, he successfully handled the precedent setting case, York v. Wood, involving the workplace harassment of a teacher by a parent.
Lecturer & Author
Villaume has lectured throughout the United States on professional liability and has served as a faculty member for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, The Professional Education Group, Inc., The Institute of Police Technology and Management at the University of Northern Florida.
Villaume has co-authored and published Teachers at Risk (1993) and authored The Law & Procedure Handbook for Minnesota Educators, Schools at Risk - Diversity, Harassment and Prevention (1995), and the inspirational music video, "Reflections - A Message of Hope."
